  • By now the music you hear should be pointing you toward your very own dance as a volunteer in the arts. If you're ready to waltz ahead on that route, take some clips from those who have painted the city.

  • Search for organizations that fit some of your interests. Step beyond your borders and be creative, explorative, enjoy brainstorming. Think local theaters, performance venues, festivals, museums, historic sites, radio, television, presses, foundations, guilds and galleries.  Interrogate friends who volunteer or create at places you're considering.

  • Zero in on what you'd like to do and where. Many organizations will be responsive to your suggestions of tasks based on your skills and experience. Others may have structured guidelines for the types of volunteer work needed. Consider selling tickets or ushering at a performance venue; guiding tours at a museum or historic site; helping with installations at a gallery; organizing and assisting at special events; writing and editing promotional materials; and partaking in marketing and fund raising.

  • Check the web. Most organizations have detailed information on their website, including descriptions of the volunteer opportunities available, contact information and often a downloadable application. If you'd like to know more about an organization, call or send them an email and ask if you could talk to one of their staff members or volunteers.

  • Whatever it is you decide to pursue, volunteering is more about the experience than it is about the actual tasks. Treat it as an creative endeavor, it will color you life.
