I am dating a person who is divorced all talk is about the ex and where the kids are, how do I know if they are still in love, and what are the chances... more

Question: I am in my mid 30's and dating a great gal with a young child from a previous marriage. My parents love her, but I am hearing from a coworker that marrying someone with children can be a nightmare entangled with problems. Should I be concerned?

Response: Marrying into a preexisting family will have its challenges. You to need  to adjust to being the “stepdad" —especially if the father is involved in his child’s life. This is can be an issue, sometimes not. This child can also feel jealousy over future children you may have with your wife; however,if you totally accept this child these feelings can be reduced. Discuss concerns prior to any long term marital commitment with a competent counselor to assure both you and your girlfriend a healthy lasting relationship. There are great aspects about being a stepparent; and as a dedicated stepfather you will receive the assurance of impacting another life in a positive manner.
